Where's the Art??

Tuesday, June 5, 2007

I didn't realize how difficult it was to find artwork that I could culturally relate to until my son was born. As you know we are in the mist of renovating our place, and it is important to me for my son to have images that reflect who he is. The below images are from vintage prints and books that have been in my family for over 30 years and are quite dear to me. It's amazing to think that some of the things from my childhood are now considered vintage! I love the colors in these paintings.

The below photo is taken from a page of Louis, by Ezra Jack Keats, who wrote and illustrated books set in urban New York throughout the 70's and 80's. My son has grown to be quite fond of this book so I've considered blowing up a few of the images and framing them for his room. The website as well as Keat's books are filled with vivid images perfect for children (or adults) . . . . . .

So. . . . . . . where's the art??

It's so true that we have no representation. I remember those paintings. And I've never seen anything like it since. Hopefully more artists will surface soon enough. But you know if you want something done, you have to do it yourself.

Yes, I agree. And I wish I had more time to draw (like I used to), but I don't so I've been keeping an eye out for some good art. Let me know if you find something.
